Dr Subhash Chandra - Leading by example
From time immemorial, society has always looked up to those who influence and inspire. A leader. Great men, historic personalities, social icons have led from the front in various spheres.
But, what are the qualities that form a great leader? What are the abilities that define leadership? Is leadership an inborn talent or a skill that can be acquired? Over the years these questions have been asked and analysed repeatedly.
A research at nearly 200 large global companies found that while the qualities traditionally associated with leadership-such as intelligence, toughness, determination, and vision-are required for success, they are insufficient. Truly effective leaders are also distinguished by a high degree of emotional intelligence, which includes self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skill.
Is it important to be a leader to become successful? Well, we can cite a popular Indian as a example – Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin Tendulkar is the best batsman in the world, however wasn't really successful as a captain of the Indian cricket team.
Is leadership a inborn talent or is it a skill that can be learnt and developed?
To answer this question, one needs to understand what composes 'success'. The formula for success is a combination of talent, skill and knowledge. Skills and knowledge can be acquired through practise and experience. But, leadership is a talent; you either have it or you don't.Dr. Subhash Chandra,
Chairman of ZEE Group, is one such leader who has pioneered and transformed the Indian Media and Entertainment Industry landscape.
He launched the country's first satellite television channel ZEE TV in 1992 and later the first private news channel, ZEE News. All of his ventures are path-breaking in nature, be it the Essel Propack, which is the largest speciality packaging company in the world; Asia's largest amusement park Essel World; or the first satellite television in India (ZEE TV). A self-made man, Dr Chandra has consistently demonstrated his ability to identify new businesses and lead them on the path to success.
Despite his impending business priorities, he takes out time to host his own TV show 'Dr Subhash Chandra show' to inspire students through his knowledge sharing sessions on a new topic every week.
The latest episode of the show was based on the topic of 'Leadership'. In this episode, Dr. Chandra shared his knowledge with the management students of IIM Lucknow on how leadership is a talent, how it is not a parameter for success and defined the set of traits required to be an effective leader.
Dr Chandra discussed about types of leaders, leadership styles, with special mention of Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi is popularly believed to be a greater communicator over being a great leader, because of his sheer 'marketing skills' to draw hundreds of thousands of followers all over the world. A good leader is one who identifies other leaders. Dr. Chandra spoke about three talent types:
- striving talent - 'why' of the person
- thinking talent - 'how' of the person
- relating talent - 'who' of the person
A great leader himself, he answered the lingering question: How to identify the 'leadership' talent. Empathy, Motivation, Stimulation, Persuasion and Command are the identifiers. Summing up, Dr. Chandra emphasized that a leader is one who creates more leaders.
This and more such inspirational knowledge sharing sessions by Dr Subhash Chandra show will be aired on Zee Business at 7 pm and on Zee News at 10 pm every Saturday.
