Effective Talent Management - Dr. Subhash Chandra

For any organisation, its team drives the growth engine. It is no secret for any industry, seeking the right mix of people for one's organisation is absolutely critical. The right skill set of workforce can significantly contribute to the business goals and propel the organisation to the next level of growth.

How do we recruit the right people for the right job?  How does one manage talent? Is talent management simply another Human Resource related jargon?
Talent management is an organization's commitment to recruit, retain, and develop the most talented and superior employees available in the job market.
But how do we identify talent?

Chairman, ZEE & Essel Group, Dr. Subhash Chandra discussed Talent Management at a leading business school on 'Dr. Subhash Chandra Show'

Identifying talent is a talent in itself. It is critical to differentiate between talent, knowledge and skill as they are different from each other. Knowledge can be transferred, skills can be acquired, but you either have talent or you don't.

Further he spoke of his book SAMVAAD that defines talent:

  • Striving talent : why of a person
  • Thinking talent: how of a person
  • Relating talent: who of a person

In addition to identifying this talent in one's employees, Dr. Subhash Chandra implied, the next logical step would be to nurture this talent. He emphasized that every company these days has some form of program designed to nurture its rising stars, and with good reason-these high-achieving individuals can have an enormous impact on business results.

In every area of strategy, increasing research shows what is needed, but making theory work has become the biggest challenge. Every organization can read the findings, but can they implement them?

Moreover, competitive advantage and business results depend more than ever on recruiting, engaging and retaining the best talent - people who are highly effective at both leadership and technical skills. But how do leaders make that happen?

Led by Dr. Subhash Chandra - the leading media conglomerate - ZEE believes it is critically important to source the right talent, train them and align them to contribute towards the business goals.

Recognized for years of consistent industry best practices, it is no surprise that ZEE HR is the two time winner of the 'DMA - Thomas Assessments National Award for Excellence in Talent Management'; an award that celebrates the spirit of excellence in HR in India. ZEE is proudly the first Company in the Media sector to win the award. ZEE's people practices -involves creating a healthy, innovative culture at the workplace and strong, supportive leaders-have been central to overall organization strategy. Incidentally ZEE is also 'The Best Media Company to Work For' in India as per survey conducted by Great Places to Work in FY14.

Concluding the session, Dr. Subhash Chandra said that successful talent management requires a sustained, three-pronged effort to recruit, engage and retain the best talent available. And to succeed at talent management, a company needs strong, supportive leaders and a caring, innovative culture.
