The purpose of life - Dr. Subhash Chandra
Most of us have no clue what we want to do with our lives. Even after one finishes their education; even after one starts working for a living, one has not realized the purpose towards their life. It is a struggle that every person goes through, asking themselves "What do I want to do with my life?” “What am I passionate about?"
Some people just waltz their way through life, day in and day out, without any aims or aspirations. And then one day, when their life is close to its end, they look back and realise that their life lacked a distinct purpose.
An episode of the Dr. Subhash Chandra Show showcased this discussion with the students of a reputed management institute, where Chairman of ZEE & Essel Group, Dr. Subhash Chandra, shared his thoughts on the purpose of life. The discussion looked at the purpose of life; whether it should be aimed at improving the quality of life or repaying back to those who've supported us throughout. It was also discussed if one's purpose in life remains constant throughout their life.
Dr. Chandra said that, to search the purpose of one's life, it was important for one to understand their ultimate goal in life, without which, life becomes less meaningful.
"Without a purpose, life is just a way of living a routine of our predecessors. Without a purpose, we lack fundamental knowledge of living. And perhaps that is why we are a victim of stress, strain and unhappiness." said Dr. Chandra. And it is for us to introspect, dig deep and find out the purpose of our life and make it more meaningful.
Having a focussed and predetermined purpose in life informs all of the life's decisions: what they study in school, where they chose to live and who they are connected with. Dr. Chandra advised that it is imperative to inculcate this mantra in living life purposefully and - 'Live life as if it's your last day, but learn as if you were to life forever'. Moreover, he advised that living life is an art - the technique of this art comes to us slowly and gradually.
A video compiling the views and perspectives of many personalities and viewers across India on their purpose in life was shared with the students in the audience.
Further with the aid of an illustration, Dr. Chandra explained that 'the purpose' of life is a central function to the desired goal attributes of values, talents, passions and skills & expertise.
But, what if we realise our purpose of our life at a much later stage, after we've completed a considerable amount of our life toiling at work, towards responsibilities and family commitments?
Sharing his personal experiences, Dr. Chandra explained how his life has two purposes - personal and spiritual. He said that the purpose of life that he discovered at age 30 hasn't changed since the past 34 years. And he explained how it is never too late to identify one's life's purpose.
Dr. Chandra opined that one must differentiate between their dreams, wants and purpose. As he concluded the insightful session, Dr. Subhash Chandra quoted one of Swami Vivekananda's pearls of wisdom - 'Arise, awake and stop not till the Goal is reached'.
