Zee Café, the English general entertainment channel (GEC), was launched in March 2000. The channel is one of the most widely viewed English channels in India. It has, today, garnered a sizeable market share of the English viewing and speaking audience.  

Since inception, Zee Café has focused on sourcing the best international content appealing to the young, urban Indian palate. The channel showcases a wide array of television entertainment ranging from popular sitcoms to reality series and live concerts to stand-up comedy acts. The most popular shows on the channel include The Best of F.R.I.E.N.D.S, Gossip Girl, Sex and The City, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Big Bang Theory, Survivor and the only Indian show capturing all the exciting party action, After Hrs.

From time to time, Zee Café endeavors to bring the latest shows on American television to the Indian audience. In its bid to preserve the topicality and relevance of its content, Zee Café telecasts E! News and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno within a mere 12 hours of its US telecast. To add to its repertoire of music-based shows such as The Gig and Full On, the channel has recently acquired the most popular series profiling the biggest rock stars and pop icons of all times, Planet Rock Profiles.  

Broadcasting the most happening international events on the channel is another prerogative – annual events include World Music Awards, Emmy’s, leading fashion shows. In recent times, Zee Café acquired the exclusive LIVE telecast rights to the most prestigious international beauty pageant- Miss World 2008 and the most esteemed awards recognizing excellence and achievements amongst women, The Women’s World Awards 2009. This year will also see the ubercool Victoria Secret on Zee Café.

Year after year, several of Zee Café’s primetime shows have been nominated and won the prestigious Emmy awards. The year 2008 has seen a whopping four of its shows - Survivor, Battlestar Galactica, Pushing Daisies and Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles being nominated at the Emmy’s across multiple categories. The AOL online poll conducted earlier this year revealed that Zee Café’s primetime boasts of the #1, #2, #3 and #4 shows in the United States.

Stepping beyond the realms of a regular television channel, Zee Café’s initiative of ‘Green turn’ (its drive towards a greener earth) has found an enthusiastic response right from viewers to advertising partners.  The initiative will scale larger heights this year.
