Zee Studio was launched in March 2000 as the ultimate English movie recourse for an audience that craves Hollywood entertainment but is denied any of it because of the lack of quality English movie inventory on TV.
The Zee Studio library is vastly exhaustive. From popular titles like 'Air Force One', 'Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions', 'Spiderman', 'Eraser', 'Pretty Woman' and 'Shall We Dance?' to critically acclaimed films like 'Cinderella Man', 'Motorcycle Diaries', 'Erin Brockovich' and 'Mona Lisa Smile'. From classics such as 'The Merchant Ivory Films' and 'The BBC Adaptation' to magnum opuses like 'Pirates of The Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' and 'Ocean's Twelve' form the rich and varied movie collection. More recently this collection has been beefed up with the addition of names like 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest', 'The Talented Mr. Ripley', 'Coyote Ugly', 'Chicago', 'Basketball Diaries', 'Dead Poets' Society', 'Frida', 'Goodwill Hunting', 'The Pink Panther', 'Scream 1 & 2', 'Spy Kids 1 & 2' and 'The Chronicles of Narnia'. In addition to this, Zee Studio has in waiting some phenomenal premieres like 'The Wrestler', 'Vicky Christina Barcelona' and 'Fireflies in the Garden' in 2009.
While Hollywood provides bulk of the English movie entertainment, Zee Studio is committed to bringing to its viewers the best across world cinema and hence has brought to screen some classics from the doyens of world cinema. Akira Kurosawa, Ingmar Bergman, Francois Truffaut, Kieslowski, Jarmusch, Pedro Almodovar, Goddard etc have all been showcased and have received a tremendous response from discerning audiences. Alongside this, Zee Studio has always saluted Indian genius by way of presenting the works of legends such as Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Deepa Mehta. With so much to choose from, Zee Studio has appropriately earned the title of being a one-stop-shop for English movie enthusiasts in India.
This enormous library has been constantly updated and upgraded. The finest titles have been presented beautifully and this grand effort has landed the channel with some accolades that it should be very proud of.
1 Promax Asia Awards in 2005, 2006 and 2008 for the best movie campaign, movie promos and the best public service announcement
2 A gold at the Promax India Awards in 2009 for the best promo in the children's programme category for the promo of 'Toony Town'
With the appreciation of Hollywood Cinema comes the interest in its glitterati, the buzz and action in the film fraternity and the high lives of the protagonists. A sneak peek into these was offered with Zee Studio bagging the exclusive rights to 'The Screen Actors Guild Awards 2009' and 'Live from the Red Carpet: Academy Awards 2009'. The telecast of these shows sent the viewership of Zee Studio soaring to new heights.
Zee Studio's pioneering act of introducing English subtitles for English movies has been emulated by all the other players in the fray. It turned out to be a master move because it started aggregating audiences beyond the realm of the so-called English movie watching stereotype.
Zee studio has also devised an excellent plan to go on-ground amidst its viewers and give them an opportunity to interact with the channel. It has recently introduced a movie club called 'Shut Up and Watch' (SAW) and weekly Karaoke bouts called 'Studio Nites' at popular clubs shops across metros. The movie club screens rare gems to an ever evolving movie audience across the country and has already gathered a substantial following and the Karaoke Nites are a celebration of famous movie soundtracks. The Karaoke Nites also offer the opportunity to attending listeners to win some attractive prizes as souvenirs from the channel.
Year 2009 saw the rise of Zee Studio as a far more aggressive player in this genre, zee studio boasted of a library of 18 premiers for the year & was able to get Oscar winners like Vicky Cristina Barcelona ,Wrestler,Pacifier etc as first time premiers just 4 weeks after its india theatrical release & creating a huge mass appeal for all its viewers across the country.
